Fresh off the Truck… Lost Surfboards have arrived at Sundown. A whole quiver of shred sleds have come into the shop. V2 Rockets and Sub-Drivers: The Sub Driver is something Kolohe Andino specifically asked for this spring. Most his small or mushy wave surfing had been on 5’10 x 18.88 x 2.25 Sub Scorchers. In solid or curvy, more powerful waves he has been riding his 6’0 x 18.25 x 2.25 squash tail Drivers. He asked for to make him something in between his “Driver with a Sub Scorcher outline”. Using the AKU shaping program I simply imported the Sub Scorcher’s outline onto the Driver rocker, bottom, foil and rails. We then sized it just between the Sub Scorcher and his Driver at 5’11 x 18.75 x 2.25. The result is a board he’s been riding in all sorts of waves from knee high San Clemente beach breaks to fun sized Indo. We came up with a cool new logo and rushed this model into the US stores for summer 2011. More nose rocker and less tail rocker (with no vee) than the Sub Scorcher. This is a great all around small to mid sized wave board for both average and exceptional surfers. Early response has been fantastic. Mick Fanning rode one of Kolohe’s  5’11 Sub Driver trade-ins into the quarter-finals (he lost on a count back) of the Hurley Pro at Trestles this year. Lost Surfboards Boards are now starting @ $599.99  Read More →

This weeks Gear Review: The Creatures of Leisure Mick Fanning Tail Pad and the Creatures of Leisure Comp Leash with DNA Technology. The Tech specs: Creatures Of Leisure Traction Pad Mick Fanning Mick Fanning Signature Pad 3 Piece Pad Side Bevelled Kick Square Grid Pattern 25mm Knuckle Kicktail 7mm Teardrop I’ve been using this pad for the last year. holds great. I like the fact that the pad comes in 3 pieces that allows you to spread the pad out on the deck a bit more for those big footed blokes with wide tailed board.  The grip is holds nicely without tearing up and irritating your knees. A highly recommended deck grip for sho! The Creatures 6ft Comp Leach with DNA Technology: This  leash is amazing! The specs: 6′x1/4″ for 2-4 foot surf. DNA flex mould, Double bearing swivel, and guaranteed for 12 months. How can you go wrong with this leash? It promises to hold up for those burly days at the beach break without tangling between your feet. The Double bearing swivel is not only durable but moves freely so the leach stays out of your way when jumping to your feet.  Read More →

Gear of the Week: 5/9-15/2011
May 9th, 2011, 10:49 am

This weeks Review: The Webber Sonic Board A Description from the Manufacturer: Greg has put an immense amount of effort into designing boards that go fast. The Sonic is the latest design incorporating a super smooth single concave, low entry and a beautifully clean continuous rocker profile that add up to one word: SONIC! This board is a ripper, and better yet it was designed to be ridden in a wide variety of good surf from knee high to overhead. The nose of the board is pulled in a bit towards a traditional short board width to minimize swing weight, but the tail and template are designed to get you up and blasting down the line quickly, while floating through flat sections with ease. This design has the latest FCS Fusion plugs and is built in high performance, ultra lightweight SLX for 2011. What We think: This board is sick!!! Tons of volume, but plenty loose. You definitely want to ride this board smaller than normal. GSI is great because they give you a volume number which tells you what size board will float you. The SLX epoxy with the Biaxel glass on the deck is really nice, durable and gives the board a bit of flex. The rounded tail allows easy and smooth transition rail to rail.  This is the board for all around NY surf. It’ll handle the mush but hold in the juice. Come in and check it out…  Read More →

This is a new post we’ll be updating throughout the summer months highlighting and reviewing some of the gear we have at Sundown. Shoot us any questions you might have on the gear. We’d love to help and find you what you need.

Gear Highlight 1: DaKine Cyclone Roll Top Wet/Dry Bag

g0002t4b

-This bag is going to save my relationship! Perfect for stuffing your wet gear in when you are going or coming from the beach. Or if you are me and live in a small apartment, leave your wetsuit in until your next surf.  It’s super durable and water tight and no nasty smells will emit from the bag.  This bag scores a 5 out of 5 for wetdry bags.

-Waterproof welded construction with roll top closure. water proof zippered front pocket.

The DaKine Shuttle Board Bag

31rlkgoxdul

-The ultimate day bag. Light, easy to slide your board in and out of and packs up easily when not in use. I  climb 3 floors everyday up and down a narrow stairwell. My board’s can’t help but bump the wall or handrail. This bag is key for keeping your board dingless and clean. Plus, it’s got a heat resistant Tarpaulin outside that will help keep your board cool when you leave it in the car all day. I give this bag a 4 out of 5.

-Fitted Tail, Heat & Water Resistant Tarpaulin Material, 1/4″ Foam Padding and corrosian resistant zipper.

DaKine Bruce  Pro Pad

DaKine makes some of the best pads out there. The Bruce Pro Pad is great for those with a high arch in their foot. It’s got a 10mm centerarch pad and a stout 25mm rolled tail kick for sticking those slides and layback hacks. It’s got a clean design and in 5 pieces which is nice for those with bigger feet and wider tails. You can spread the pad out a little more.  Definitely a 4 out of 5.
