Video Flash Back: O’neill’s Ozone by Tony Roberts
Perhaps one of the most radical surf movies of the transition period between Old School and New School of the late 80’s and early 90’s! Ozone introduced many surfers to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Pato Banton, Bad Brains and more… The Luke Egan/Matt Hoy segment is filthy! Richie Collins complaining about other surfers in his way while he’s trying to work. Classic quote: ” How would you like it if someone was standing on your desk while you were trying to get work done?”
The Gerr Segment is unreal! Brad Gerlach shredding to the Buck Pets sountrack! The best is when he talks about his training regiment: “I do Boxing for aggression and then Ballet for flow…” A sick classic film… Enjoy the opening segment…

Fish Fry and Shred Fest this past weekend
Some fun rippable waves were on hand this past weekend for the 3rd anual Fish Fry held at Lincoln Blvd in LB! The crew from all over LI were on it for Saturday morning, riding all kinds of cool boards. I got to try a sweet little Pendoflex Twin Keel. Flex is the future of surfboards and this board squirted out speed when the wave steepend up! Pretty trippy little board. Then I got the ride the mother of all fish’s, A Skip Frye 6′9 Twin Keel Long Fish, courtesy of Trent. A very rare gem and this thing was sweet and smooth! Skip’s Protege’ Josh Hall was on hand to witness his mentor’s boards being ridden and butt wiggled. Josh, is a classic underground Sandy Ego shaper who is young but quickly gaining respect in the shaping community. I was lucky enough to hang with him the night after for some scandal and pool! The Cherry Tavern is where it’s at. $5 shot of Tequila and Tecate Beer Special. Can’t beat that. Josh took to chatting up the voluptious bartender Jess while she waited for the lu. No luck for the young shaper at the Tavern. But, a good time was had. Some shots below of the Fry and our night out.

Josh Hall Long Fish (Protege)

Tyler’s Surf DVD Pick of the Week!
My name is Tyler Breuer. This is the first edition of Sundown’s DVD Pick of the Week.
I wanted to start my surf film pick with a little bit of history but I didn’t want to totally date myself. I believe it is important that people know there history but I don’t want people to fall asleep either. Especially the grommets looking to amp up. So, my first pick is Kelly Slater in Black and White. Richard Woolcot, the CEO of Volcom, was originally working for Quiksilver and the big wigs putting together some of their films and he just happened to nail it with this film. It was totally groundbreaking. The music from Mother Love Bone, aka Pearl Jam before Eddie Veder, is loud, fast and perfect for pumping up. It shows a humble and somewhat embarrassed Slater as he traveled to Fiji, Hawaii, France, California, and back home in Florida. The interviews are funny and candid. The Surfing is still sick by today’s standard. When you watch this movie, and then watch other surf movies that were out around that time and you gain a greater appreciation for how far in advanced Slater was. He surfing was so radical compared to what was going on at the time. The impact of this film is just starting to be realized as Slater starts to wind down his competitive career. People really won’t be able to gage how far he brought surfing until well after he has left the tour. This movie is a must for any serious surfer. It’s available on our online store right now! Go up to the DVD header up there to the right of your screen and click on it and KSBW will be there waiting for you.
Enjoy the teaser… See you next week.

Beyond Blazing Boards
Perhaps one of the best and most influential surf movies of the eighties was “Beyond Blazing Boards”. The Whole Momentum generation was introduced to high performance surfing through Chris Bystrom and his movies from the early to mid eighties. The Curren and Occy Footage is insane. Occy’s huge forehand, layback air was so radical, even by today’s standard! Bystrom leads the film with his quarky humor and genuine stoke resulting in a unique narration that is often lacking from surf films today. Maybe we have grown too cynical to appreciate the clean and often silly humor. The closests filmmaker today would have to be Thomas Cambell who recently premeired his latest film “The Present”. Bystrom who passed away a few years ago in a car accident is perhaps one of the most prolific surf filmmakers and not only documented the new radical surfing of the eighties but also was there covering the Longboard resurgance during the early to mid ninties. This Movie is a classic and essential to any surf video enthustiast. Copies should be coming into Sudown in the next week or so. We will keep you updated…
